encouraging women's leadership in Point Cook
Women in Point Cook will be the first to share in $250,000 of Brumby Labor Government Women's Leadership grants, Victorian Minister for Women's Affairs Maxine Morand has announced.

Announcing the new grant in Point Cook, Ms Morand said $17,000 would be provided to help women from Indian, Sudanese, Karen, Thai, Chinese and Greek backgrounds in Point Cook to build their leadership skills and become more involved in their community.

"This grant is part of the Brumby Labor Government's commitment to creating a community where women have equal representation and can fully participate in all aspects of community and public life," Ms Morand said.

"The grant will be provided to the Wyndham City Council Point Cook Women's Leadership Project to facilitate seven leadership workshops for women isolated by language or cultural barriers in the Point Cook area.

"I congratulate Wyndham City Council for providing opportunities for women's leadership and decision-making and I'm delighted that the Brumby Labor Government can assist through this grant."

Ms Morand said the workshops aimed to increase participants' knowledge about their community, the concept of leadership and leadership opportunities within their community.

"At the end of the program participants will be encouraged to run a community project or event with the assistance of a facilitator," she said.

"We want to foster communities where women can be recognised and supported to build their leadership skills, regardless of their background."

Wyndham City Council's community project team leader Tanaya Knight said: "This project is important for women and families across Point Cook.

"It will give culturally and linguistically diverse women who may be feeling socially isolated an opportunity to enhance their leadership skills and interact with other women in the community," Ms Knight said.

"The program will focus on awareness about themselves and their community. There will be time for women to network and eventually run a program tailored to their needs which contributes to the community."

Further Women's Leadership Grants will be rolled out over coming weeks.
