QUT has given 109 outstanding students a financial boost to their first year of uni thanks to Vice-Chancellor's Scholarships totalling more than $2 million.
The high-achieving students include Year 12 graduates from schools across Brisbane and around Queensland, who are now all Vice-Chancellor's Scholars and members of QUT's College of Excellence.
The prestigious scholarship program recogises high-achieving OP1 or OP2 students, and also rewards elite athletes and creative industries students.
The scholars met QUT Vice-Chancellor Professor Peter Coaldrake at a special ceremony at QUT earlier this year.
Our 2012 recipients include dual OP1 recipients and Redeemer Lutheran College (Rochedale) graduates Adam Chalmers and Jessica Collins, who have each been awarded $25,000 scholarships to study at QUT. Jessica is in her first year of a Bachelor of Design and Adam is doing a Bachelor of Games and Interactive Entertainment.
Twins Benjamin and Matthew Seery attended Rivermount College at Yatala last year, both received OP1s and are now both at QUT on $25,000 Vice-Chancellor's Scholarships. Benjamin has almost completed his first semester of a medical imaging science degree and Matthew is doing a Bachelor of Fine Arts.
Cavendish Road State High (Holland Park) graduates Amar Velic and Victoria Tobin are also VC Scholars after their OP1 school efforts. Amar is doing a double degree in business and engineering, and Victoria is studying toward a Bachelor of Engineering.
Two Somerville House graduates are also now VC scholars at QUT - Hannah Fas is doing a double degree in applied science and law, and Genevieve Sargent is studying for a business degree.
Brisbane State High was the school to produce the most Vice-Chancellor's Scholars this year - five graduates ar now studying at QUT under the program. They are Naomi Paxton (Applied Science), Kaitlin Borgeaud-Moo (Pharmacy), Angela Chen (Vision Science), Linh Tran (Vision Science) and Sonny O'Brien (Fine Arts).
This year's sporting scholars also include Nanango High graduate Mikeely Roberts (running, swimming, triathlons) who is doing a double degree in secondary education and exercise and movement science, and champion dancer and soccer player Fern Doyle, who graduated from Genesis Christian College and is studying journalism and law.
Applications for the 2013 round of QUT Vice-Chancellor's Scholarships open on August 1, 2012, and close on November 16, 2012.
Next year 70 academic scholarships worth $25,000 will be on offer (paid at approximately $6000 per year for up to four years), and 35 academic scholarships worth $6500 scholarships (paid at approximately $2000 per semester over 1.5 years). A further 10 scholarships will be available to elite athletes and 12 scholarships for outstanding creative industries students.
Scholars also become members of the QUT College of Excellence and may be able to do accelerated degrees and become QUT student ambassadors. |
