Swinburne University of Technology and the City of Stonnington have awarded the Sir Edward 'Weary' Dunlop Scholarship to Swinburne TAFE student Emma Sandford.

The $3000 scholarship celebrates the life and work of the late war hero Sir Edward 'Weary' Dunlop. It is awarded to students who receive outstanding results throughout their studies at Swinburne and who have been involved with a community service program for a significant period of time.

Ms Sandford has completed a Bachelor Arts/Law, Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice in addition to recently completing a Certificate IV in Community Services Work at Swinburne.

Whilst studying, Ms Sandford has also donated her own time volunteering for community organisations.

She served as a volunteer at the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre, Australian Red Cross, MS Society of Victoria, Public Interest Law Clearing House, Environment Defenders Office and Conservation Volunteers Australia and currently sits on Melbourne City Council's Parks and Gardens Advisory Committee as a community member.

"I tend to live by John F Kennedy's philosophy of: it's not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country," Ms Sandford said.

"There's no better feeling then giving back to the people of your community."

Ms Sandford says that her volunteer work and involvement with the community is what influenced her to undertake a Certificate IV in Community Services Work at Swinburne.

"I'm incredibly lucky to be enjoying what I'm doing and I'm thrilled to have been awarded the Sir Edward 'Weary' Dunlop Scholarship," she said.

In addition to the Sir Edward 'Weary' Dunlop Scholarship, this year the Stonnington Council presented an award valued at $1,500 in recognition of student achievements. This has been awarded to Swinburne student Dogannur Gunduz.

Mrs Gunduz was born in Turkey and is currently studying a diploma of laboratory technology in forensic and pathology at Swinburne.

Since 2008 Ms Gunduz has worked as a volunteer in childcare at the Holden Street Neighbourhood House as well as volunteering at the Prahran Mission.

"Ms Sandford and Ms Gunduz should be incredibly proud of the contributions they have made to our community through their volunteer work," Swinburne Chancellor Mr Bill Scales said.

"Not only have they given their own time to serve the community but they serve as wonderful role models for others."

The awards ceremony was held on the anniversary of Sir Edward 'Weary' Dunlop's birthday, on 12 July, at his statue in the King's Domain, on St Kilda Road in Melbourne.
